Q1-
A very hectic session. Aston Martin worked hard to get their cars out in time to get a lap on the board. Stroll was able to get out of the garage, but on his outlap, he collided with his fellow Canadian, Nicholas Latifi. He has received a 3 place grid penalty for the race on sunday for the collision. After the red flag finished, it was a sprint race to get over the line and set another lap with only two minutes on the clock. Sebastian Vettel was able to get out of his garage and set a time to go 18th fastest. Alex Albon was disqualified after the session for not being able to produce a fuel sample. That moves Vettel up one slot to 17th. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was knocked out of Q1 as well with lots of work to do if he wants to score points in the top 10 in the race.
Q2-
One of the smoother sessions of the qualifying today. Bottas’ 103 Q3 streak ended after qualifying 12th. Zhou Gyuanu, the other Alfa Romeo, was eliminated in 14th. The Alpha Tauri’s seem to be in no man’s land. Not too much pace, but not slow. Both Gasly and Tsunoda got knocked out in Q2, 11th and 13th respectively. Mick Schumacher finished in 15th also getting knocked out.
Q3-
What a session. Ferrari and Red Bull seemed to be fighting for pole position, but towards the end of the session, Alonso put on a stonker of a lap with the fastest middle sector. He crashed after his car had a hydraulic problem, keeping his car in 4th gear. A very disappointing end to his session as he seemed to be in contention for pole position. Maybe El Plan worked? The red flag caused Sainz to lose his best lap a few seconds before he crossed the line. After the red flag, he had issues starting his car, keeping him from leaving his garage as planned. This meant he couldn’t warm his tires to his own liking. Verstappen seemed to have the upper hand at the end of the session, but Charles Leclerc came over the line to take pole position by .286 seconds! Mclaren finished their best qualifying this season, with Aussie fans cheering for Ricciardo starting 7th tomorrow. Mercedes seemed to be off the pace, but pulled in good laps before the end of Q3. It looks like it’ll be another Leclerc vs. Verstappen battle tomorrow!
Here’s the results of Q3:
Charles Leclerc
Max Verstappen
Sergio Perez
Lando Norris
Lewis Hamilton
George Russell
Daniel Ricciardo
Esteban Ocon
Carlos Sainz
Fernando Alonso
